PRODUCTION OF CARBOXY POLYSACCHARIDE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively isolate transition metal from the reaction mixture in the production of carboxy polysaccharide by using a combination of a transition metal and an oxidizer. SOLUTION: In the production of carboxy polysaccharide by oxidizing polysaccharide with a combination of a transition metal compound and an oxidizer, the reaction mixture after the oxidization is adjusted its pH to 1-6 before an inorganic carrier is used to adsorb and immobilize the transition metal whereby the transition metal is removed from the reaction mixture. In a preferred embodiment, the inorganic carrier is selected from the group consisting of zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, manganese oxide, samarium oxide, antimony oxide, silica- alumina, ceria-titania, zinc hydroxide and zirconium hydroxide.
