The engine uses an offset-rotor vane-type turbine-compressor (15,16), with an external combustion chamber (5). When exhaust gas pressure exceeds a set value a valve (3) connects the pressurized gas to a storage reservoir, which can be used to drive the turbine. During braking external air is admitted and compressed for delivery to a second reservoir, for later use in driving the turbine.
