An apparatus (10) for extracting screw elements (108) from a screw shaft (10 6) comprises a frame (12), a stationary clamp (18) mounted on the frame (12) an d disposable between open and closed positions, a carriage (32) mounted on the frame (12) for motion toward and away from the stationary clamp (18), a movable clamp (38) mounted on the carriage (32) for motion therewith and disposable between open and closed positions, a first drive (28, 30) coupled to the stationary clamp (18) for opening and closing the stationary clamp (18), a second drive (48, 50) coupled to the movable clamp (38) for opening and closing the movable clamp (38), and a third drive (52) coupled to the carriage (32) for causing motion of the carriage toward and away from the stationary clamp (18), wherein clamping of a downstream screw element (108) by the stationary by the stationary clamp (18), clamping of an upstream screw element (108') by the movable clamp and one or more strokes of the carriage (32) away from the stationary clamp (18) result in removal of the downstream screw element (108) held in place by the stationary clamp (18) from the scre w shaft (106). The procedure is repeated until all the remaining screw element s (108) are removed. |
