A sensor for reading a compass bearing employs direction sensitive magnetic field measuring systems. To ensure that a minimum deflection of the compass needle produces a maximum sensor signal strength, the distance of the sensor from the compass is adjusted so that the sensor signal itself is used to assess the coupling between sensor and compass.
