Sensors (2) sensitive to magnetic fields are arranged in a quadratic pattern of columns and rows and are located on the surface (1) on which the object is positioned. The sensors react to magnetic materials in the body, producing signals which are compared with reference signals acquired and stored by positioning a body in various positions on the surface. The surface may be flat or curved.
