PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially advantageously producing a high-qualityε-caprolactone having excellent polymer color tone without requiring repeated rectification for improving purification. SOLUTION: In this method for producingε-caprolactone by oxidizing cyclohexanone to give a reaction mixture containingε-caprolactone and distilling the reaction mixture so as to remove impurities, after treatment with a basic substance in an inert gas atmosphere and heat treatment at a temp. of >=130 deg.C are carried out, single distillation or simple distillation by a distillation column having <=5 theoretical plates is performed.
