摘要 A component is cooled by separate, consecutive adiabatic expansion of two different gases through a common orifice. The first gas is chosen for having relatively high cooling efficiency but relatively high boiling point, the second gas for having relatively low boiling point but at the expense of relatively low cooling efficiency. An Independent claim is included for an apparatus for cooling an infrared detector probe, which has a Joule-Thomson cooler with a common expansion orifice, containment vessels for high efficiency cooling gas and low boiling point gas, pipe work and valves connecting the vessels to the expansion orifice, and a non-return valve or equivalent restriction is installed in the outlet from the low boiling point vessel to prevent ingress of the higher boiling point gas. Alternatively, both gases are stored in a single, flexible membrane partitioned container.
