The display device has a control unit and a display, e.g. a liquid crystal display, divided into a number of symbol fields, each used for display of a single pictogram. The control allows each new pictogram to be displayed in a given field, with the previously displayed pictograms moved by one display field without altering the pictogram display sequence, a manual operating element (13) used for selecting the displayed sequence of pictograms.
