An ice protection device for a pond or the like comprises a hollow thermally - insulated body (1) with one end thereof open, the body being adapted to floa t on water with the open end at a distance below the surface of the water greater than the maximum expected thickness of ice formed on the water. The body has a generally planar flange (5) projecting around the outside thereof so as to rest on the surface of the water, and an enlarged head portion (6) above the flange with at least one vent opening (9) into the space between t he head portion and the flange to allow the passage of air into the hollow body and gases out of the hollow body.
