A tripod (1) having support legs (6) which automatically open and close when placed on a surface and removed from the surface, respectively, and having a self-contained battery (110). The tripod (1) includes a telescopic center post (4), downwardly extending legs (6), coupling links (8) pivotally attached at one end to a bottom end of the post (4) and pivotally attached at the other end to the legs (6), and a battery (110) positioned within a center of the post (4). The pivotal attachment of the links (8) to the legs (6) is offset towards an outer edge of the legs (6) to bias the legs (6) outwardly and facilitate the automatic opening of the legs (6). The outward biasing of the links (8) and legs (6) allows the legs (6) to close to a vertical position parallel and adjacent to the post (4) while allowing the legs (6) to automatically open when the tripod (1) is placed on the surface. The battery (110) is contained within the post (4) and includes an electrical cord (120) extending within the post (4). The weight of the battery and the telescopic configuration of the post (4) cause the legs (6) to automatically close when the tripod is lifted. A base (144) is mounted to the bottom end of the post (4) and unscrews to allow access to the battery (110). |
