The support beam for a heavy duty gantry crane has a box section main beam (1) with a rectangular cross section with internal bulkheads (6). The beam is fitted with lateral profiles (12) which carry the two gantry rails (9,10). Each lateral profile has a main plate (12) with a central cutout which fits around the bottom of the main beam. The corners of the cutout have rounded cutouts (15,16) to prevent edge stresses when the lateral profile is welded to the beam. The outer edges of the lateral profile are strengthened by lipped flanges.
