Sludge is removed from a filter by drying the sludge and shaking it off by applying vibrations. The apparatus for removal of sludge from the surface of a cylindrical filter (1) includes a filter support unit (2) for holding the rotatable filter at a specified angle of inclination to the horizontal. The unit incorporates cams supplying a rotational drive force and a subsequent impact force to the filter. The apparatus further includes a motor (3) for rotational drive of the cams, and a storage unit (47, 48) for sludge falling off the filter. The claimed method involves drying the sludge which remains in the filter, and shaking off the sludge from the filter by application of vibrations to the latter. Preferred Features: The filter support unit (2) incorporates front and rear plates (21, 22), a drive shaft (23) with cams in frictional contact with the filter face plates (11, 12), and auxiliary shafts (24) with rollers (30). The apparatus further includes means (37, 38, 39) for transfer of the motor torque to the drive shaft. Means are provided for reversing the angle of inclination of the filter by rotating the filter support about an axis perpendicular to the principal axis of the filter. The method includes use of compressed air for removal of process liquid and sludge before drying.
