The button (11) has different functions with which it can be associated during its operation. The current function of the button is indicated by an associated, electrically controllable display unit (14) that forms an integral part of the button. The display unit is mounted on the front surface (12) of the button facing the operator and acting as the manual actuation surface. Several mutually independently actuated display units can be mounted on the front of a button.
