The invention relates to a method for determining characteristic mapping data or for determining one or more parameters for one or more mathematical functions provided for controlling an internal combustion engine. The idea is that each measured value necessary for the engine control characteristic map is no longer individually detected and received by setting the corresponding influence factors on the engine which is located on the drive test stand. Rather, the remaining values are determined from a considerably smaller number of received measured values by means of numeric, especially statistical evaluation and calculation methods. As a result, the number of necessary measured values are significantly reduced thus resulting in a significant reduction of the necessary test stand measuring time. The invention also relates to an method and to an electronic engine control device for controlling an internal combustion engine. The basic idea is that each individual characteristic map value is no longer stored in the engine control device, rather merely the parameters of mathematical functions are filed. Using the parameters, said mathematical functions describe the dependency of different target variables on different influence factors. By merely filing the parameters of mathematical functions, the required storage capacity of the engine control device is significantly economized.
