Operating an electric arc furnace to build up and maintain foam slag

Slag-forming materials are introduced into the furnace at a maximum rate to build up slag until the current consumed by the electrodes (2,3,4) is reduced. Then the rate of introduction is successively reduced until a predetermined value of current consumption is reached. Subsequently this value is maintained constant by reduction or increase of the rate at which the slag-forming materials are introduced.
