The communications system has at least one exchange(7) which accepts calls within the network and passes them to the desired network subscribers. At least one call distribution device (1) distributes incoming calls to the exchange. The exchange contains a first controller (8,10,12) to which the distribution device automatically passes low priority incoming calls, and a second controller (9,11,13) to which higher priority calls are passed. A call acceptance device (23) allocates the first and second controllers in which actuation of the call acceptance device results in acceptance of a call from the second controller. If there is no call at the second controller, then acceptance of a call at the first controller takes place.
