The mirror (5), mounted on the vehicle's exterior bodywork, incorporates a display (14) in the outer edge of its housing which is reflected in the curved edge of the mirror to give an image (15) outside the normal field of view when there is an obstacle such as another vehicle in the driver's blind spot angle (18). The display, e.g. an electroluminescent diode matrix, liquid crystals or a plasma screen, is covered by a transparent plate and is connected to a detector (17) in the form of a telemetric radar device or camera which illuminates it when an obstacle is present. The circuit containing the detector, radar/camera and a processing module (19) is connected via a switch (20) to the vehicle's direction indicator (21) so that the mirror indicator is switched on when the driver wants to make a turn or change direction. |
