The apparatus (1) has a fan and filter housing (2). The air intake is via a front chamber (3) which holds a filter insert (4) and has a louvered cover (7). A sensor, e.g. a microswitch (10) detects the present and correct insertion of the filter (4) fixing ring (6) and cap (7). The fan will only run when the microswitch is operated.
