The locking and unlocking mechanism for a vehicle includes a device (4) for entry of an unlocking code by the user. A memory (5) holds the user's unlocking code and the constructor's unlocking code. A comparison circuit (3) compares the code entered by the user with the stored value in order to allow operation of the vehicle when the codes correspond. A further circuit (6) detects the use of the constructor's unlocking code. When this code is used, this returns the user's unlocking code is returned to zero, and a new constructor's unlocking code is generated using a pseudo-random number generator and this new number is then stored in the memory in place of the original number.
