An in vitro skin irritation test uses biomembranes made of one or more layers formed from proteins (12) and/or lipid (10) and optionally including cholesterol (14). The layers are formed by passing a substrate (22) through a Langmuir-Blodgett trough (16). Upon exposure to an irritant, changes in the biomembrane, e.g., a change in thickness determined by refractive index measured by a surface plasmon spectrometer, indicate the potential harm of the irritant.
|
