The hopper 2 of a container 4 is closed by a pivoting emptying hatch 8 held by a bolt 14. A ground-feeler foot 22 is mounted in a sliding manner on the outside of the hopper 2 and carries a latch 30 which can unbolt the bolt 14 during a downward movement of the container towards the ground. The bolting/unbolting operations are carried out automatically under the effect of the vertical displacements of the container. Application to containers for the collection of used articles, for example for the collection of glass. <IMAGE>
