The sensor (30) has a casing element (31) defining a hollow space (33) sealed by a base (32) at its bottom end,. The base has a pair of lengthwise thinner sections (32b) on opposite sides of a central thicker section. A piezoelectric element (35) is mounted on the inside of the thicker section, for transmission and reception of ultrasound energy.
