<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liq. crystal compsn. which exhibits a small variation in threshold voltage over a wide temp. range and has a high contrast ratio and a high-speed responsiveness by incorporating a difluoroethylene deriv., a cyano compd., and an optically active compd. into the same. SOLUTION: This compsn. contains a difluoroethylene deruv. of formula I, a cyano compd. of formula II, and an optically active compd. of formula III. In the formulas, R<1> and R<3> are each a 1-10C alkyl, a group formed by inserting -Obetween a C-C bond of a 2-10C alkyl, 1-10C alkoxy, or 2-10C alkenyl; R<2> is a 1-10C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl, H, or halogen; A<1> is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; A<2> is (halogenated) 1,4-phenylene; Cy is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene; X<1> is H or a halogen; Ph is 1,4-phenylene; Z is -COO- or -OCO-; m is 1 or 2; r and q are each 0 or 1; and C* is an optically active carbon atom.</p> |
