The navigation system has at least one source of external data (208,211) e.g. a satellite or terrestrial radio transmitter, at least one input (204,206) e.g. a mileage counter or gyroscope, for receiving motor vehicle data, a database medium (210) with map data stored within it, and a CPU (202) coupled to the receiver, input and database medium and which performs navigation functions using the external data, vehicle data and map data. A communications connection to the CPU transfers interface data to the vehicle controller. The CPU selects a communications protocol for passing interface data based at least partially on a data type associated with the interface. Independent claims are also included for a method of transferring interface data, and a data communications computer program.
