Overload element for limiting tensile and/or compressive forces of two portions which can be displaced with respect to one another in the event of overload and are locked with respect to one another in a force-transmitting position by an adjustably prestressed locking mechanism (10, 12, 14) which is acted upon by a device (18, 20, 22) for producing an axial force. In order to be able to adjust the release force remotely, with as small an overall volume as possible, a force-deflection device (16, 26, 28) for increasing the axial force is arranged between the hydraulically, pneumatically or electromagnetically actuated device, which can be adjusted remotely as intended for producing axial force (18, 20, 22), and one of the supporting bodies (14) of the locking mechanism. <IMAGE>
