Crankcase construction for internal combustion engine

The crankcase (1) has a top portion (3) connected to the lower portion (2) which includes an oil sump (11) via a horizontal joint line level with the axis of the shaft bearings. The crankcase is of lightweight construction with weight-reducing cutouts (24) at least in the top part. A metal casing (16) for the timing chain is attached to one end of the crankcase and the housing (50) for the flywheel is attached to the other end.
