Barrier layer for laser ablative imaging

A process for forming a single colour ablation image uses an ablative recording element which contains an infrared-absorbing material and comprises a support coated with, in order, a barrier layer and colourant layer. The barrier layer is obtained from an aqueous latex dispersion of a polycyanoacrylate copolymer of formula (I). R = optionally substituted 1-20C alkyl; VA = a repeating unit resulting from polymerisation of a vinyl-containing monomer with a pendant ionisable group. The weight ratio of x:y is 97:3 to 70:30. The colourant layer comprises a dispersion of colourant in a polymeric binder. The colourant side of the element is subjected to heating by laser and the ablated colourant is removed to provide an image.
