The low pressure melting furnace (3) has a central wall (5) which divides the melting chamber (3) into two parts (3a,3b) which are connected to each other through an opening in the wall (5) near the chamber floor. The part (3b) of the chamber has two outlet spouts (10a,10b) through which the molten metal is poured into a mould. A compressed gas, such as air, is pumped into the other part (3a) of the chamber by a pneumatically actuated piston and cylinder. The air of gas is delivered at a controlled rate in order to control the rate of flow of the molten metal through the spouts (10a,10b) into the mould.
