<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in high yield by reacting methanol with acetaldehyde and propionaldehyde in a vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst containing copper and zinc. SOLUTION: This method for producing isobutylaldehyde comprises reacting (B) methanol with (C) acetaldehyde and/or propionaldehyde in the presence of (A) a catalyst containing copper and/or zinc (e.g. copper nitrate, copper sulfate, zinc nitrate or zinc sulfate) in a vapor phase, preferably at 200-450 deg.C. In the above reaction, a molar ratio of the component B to the component C is preferably 1-10. A metal such as Al, Cr, Si, Zr, La, Mg, Mn or B can be added in addition to copper and zinc which are main components having catalyst activity as the above catalyst and especially, a catalyst containing copper, zinc and aluminum or a catalyst containing copper and chromium is preferable.</p> |
