A power supply for an electrodeless lamp (R) having an exterior starting electrode (26) and first and second magnetrons (8, 10) coupled to the lamp (2) comprises first and second power sources (12, 14) for being connected to the respective first and second magnetrons (8, 10); a switch (16) having first and second positions (18, 20), the first position (18) for disconnecting the second power source (14) from the second magnetron (10) and connecting the output of the second power source (14) to the output of the first power source (12) such that they are added together for being connected to the first magnetron (8) during starting of the lamp, the second position (20) for disconnecting the second power source (14) from the first magnetron (8) and connecting the second power source (14) to the second magnetron (10) after the lamp has started; and a controller (32) adapted to synchronize the starting of the first and second power sources (12, 14) and the starting electrode (26) such that they are turned on at the same time during starting of the lamp.
