A gray cast iron piece, for incorporation in a cast aluminum part, has an adhesion promoting manganese-containing coating on its surface to be covered with the aluminum. An Independent claim is also included for a casting process for incorporating a gray cast iron piece in a cast aluminum part using the adhesion promoting manganese-containing coating as described above. Preferred Features: The manganese-containing coating consists of (a) a manganese-iron alloy of composition 40 - 95 (especially 80) % Fe and 60-5 (especially 20) % Mn; or an aluminum-manganese alloy of composition 40 - 95 (especially 95) % Al and 60 - 5 (especially 5)% Mn.
