The quaternary starch ether ester has a specified degree of substitution by the ether groups, a specified degree of substitution by the ester groups and a specified overall degree of substitution. A water-insoluble quaternary starch ether ester contains ester groups of the formulae -O-CO-CH3 and/or -O-CO-C2H5 and ether groups of formula -O-CH2-X-CH2-N<+>R3A<-> (I); X = a direct bond or -CH(OH)-; A<-> = an anion or one equivalent of an anion (preferably chloride or one equivalent of sulfate or phosphate); and R = H, methyl and/or ethyl and are preferably all the same. The degree of substitution by the ether groups is 0.002-0.8 (preferably 0.2-0.7), the degree of substitution by the ester groups is 0.7-2.998 (preferably 2-2.5) and the overall degree of substitution is 1.5-3 (preferably 2.5-3). Independent claims are also included for: (1) a process for preparing a water-insoluble quaternary starch ether ester as above, which comprises etherifying starch with reagents which introduce ether groups of formula (I) into the starch, then esterifying the etherified starch with an acetylating or propionylating reagent and, if necessary, partially hydrolyzing the esterified etherified starch to the desired degree of substitution; (2) an aminated acetate fiber, which comprises acetyl cellulose and one or more water-insoluble quaternary starch ether esters as above; (3) a process for preparing an aminated acetate fiber as above, which comprises mixing a water-insoluble quaternary starch ether ester as above into an acetate spinning dope and spinning the resulting dope into fiber; (4) an alternative preparation of the aminated acetate fiber, which comprises mixing with cellulose a cationic starch containing ether groups of formula (I), acetylating and, if desired, propionylating the resulting mixture, partially hydrolyzing the acetylated or propionylated mixture to the desired degree of substitution and precipitating and spinning the resulting product; and (5) a process for preparing a dyed or printed textile material, which comprises dyeing or printing a woven or knitted material comprising aminated acetate fibers as above with one or more textile dyes.
