A high temperature superconductor strip is produced by depositing the superconductor layer (D) onto a substrate strip (A), applying a support strip (E), and then detaching the support strip and superconductor layer combination. A high temperature superconductor strip is produced by: (a) epitaxially depositing a temporary layer (C) on a substrate strip (A) which is suitable for deposition of biaxially textured high temperature superconductor layers and which may have an epitaxially deposited buffer layer (B); (b) depositing a high temperature superconductor layer (D) onto the temporary layer or an optional overlying interlayer; (c) applying a support strip (E) onto the high temperature superconductor layer (D); and (d) separating the structure along the temporary layer (C) to detach the support strip and high temperature superconductor layer combination for use as a high temperature superconductor strip.
