Method of detecting a number of faults in a motor vehicle charging system enables faults to be detected whilst the system is operating under all normal operating conditions

The method involves detecting faults in a generator with three phases by determining the differences between the chained voltages of the generator between corresp. phases; determining a relative order of magnitude of a root mean square value of the chained generator voltages; and indicating a fault if the relative orders of magnitude are not approximately equal. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for implementing the method.
