PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a gaseous fuel having a high energy efficiency whereby beer lees contg. protein in a high concn. can be treated just as in the state of being discharged in a high concn. by heating beer lees having a specified water content under pressure in the presence of a hydrogen-activated metal catalyst under specified conditions. SOLUTION: 1 pt.wt. beer lees having a water content of 90 wt.% or lower, pref. 70-80 wt.%, and produced in beer production plants is treated in the presence of 0.01-5 pts.wt. hydrogen-activated metal catalyst [e.g. an industrial nickel metal catalyst, a cobalt catalyst, or a catalyst contg. a transition metal (e.g. Fe or Pt)] under a pressure of at least the satd. water vapor pressure at 200 deg.C or higher, pref. 300-400 deg.C, for 30-40 min to convert org. substances in beer lees into a gaseous state, giving a gaseous fuel which mainly comprises hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide and can be treated with water with a TOC concn. of several hundred ppm or higher. Thus, the loss of evaporation energy due to a large amt. of water contained in beer lees can be avoided. |
