A two-stage (1, 2) biological process treats effluent water using activated, suspended sludge. A two-stage (1, 2) biological process treats effluent water using activated, suspended sludge. Water effluent is received by a balancing tank (1). While the reactor (2) is subsequently filled with raw water, sludge is pumped into the reactor (2). When the fluid has reached the maximum permissible level within the reactor, sludge pumping is terminated. When the reactor is subsequently emptied, the sludge is first pumped out and transferred to the balancing tank (1) until the point at which the water level in the reactor tank reaches the level where clean water discharge is triggered. The discharge of clean water and the return of sludge to the balancing tank is terminated when the fluid level in the reactor has fallen to the minimum allowable point. The reactor is then re-filled with effluent water from the balancing tank.
