The engine has two camshafts (1,2) in the cylinder head (3) with phase adjustment devices (4,5) installed at the ends. The timing drive (6,7) connected to the crankshaft incorporates a sprocket (52,53) for each camshaft, altering timing by introducing oil under pressure into chambers (14-17) on either side of actuator pistons (10,11). Sliding sleeves (18,19) and helical teeth (20,23) engage to convert longitudinal motion into rotary motion. Phase adjustment devices are combined with two control valves and oil channels.
