The invention relates to a method and a device for manipulating microparticles in a fluid passing through one first channel or several first channels as a flow. One or more microparticles (14) are subjected to a change of direction under the influence of electric field barriers. Said microparticle (s) take a different direction to that of the flow and pass to the edge of the flow, to a side opening (17) of the particular first channel. The invention hereby provides a means of moving microparticles back and forth in fluid flows. Preferred applications for the invention are processing, separating, sorting and holding procedures.
