Naphthyridone compounds having the formula: Wherein Z is an amine or an aliphatic heterocyclic group, R is a phenyl group or an aromatic heterocyclic group and R1 is hydrogen or a carboxy protecting group. The compounds of the invention have antibacterial activity.
