Disclosed is an arrangement (1) for a vehicle frame hitch (2) attached to a vehicle (3) by an attachment component (4), and having a towing ball (5) extending rearwards from the vehicle. This arrangement usually by- passes the integral deformation zones of the vehicle, and in the event of a collision from the rear the impact is transferred directly to the occupants. The arrangement (1) reduces the impact by incorporating lattice beams (7) which compress under impact, allowing the ball (5) to deflect so that the vehicle bumper absorbs some of the forces. Alternative embodiments include an exploding bolt or pin between the frame hitch and the vehicle, telescopic bars, a gas or liquid filled piston arrangement, a shear plate, and cables arranged to absorb the tractive forces when towing but collapse when subjected to a given force in the forward direction. |
