The invention concerns an autonomous and portable cryogenic apparatus using mainly the flashing temperature (of the order of -78 DEG C at atmospheric pressure), of carbon dioxide (CO2) in liquid/solid phase or the equivalent, comprising a reservoir of CO2 liquefied under pressure whereof the extracting head is connected to a system for expanding and ejecting liquid/solid CO2 and comprising members controlling the expansion and the temperature in the working zone. The invention is characterised in that the CO2 reservoir head is arranged on the apparatus such that while it is being used, only the CO2 liquid part inside the reservoir comes in contact with said head to be extracted and projected towards the working zone via an expansion and ejection system. The apparatus in the form of a gun is particularly useful in sports medicine.
