PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful as an intermediate for producing biphenyl-2,2',3,3'-tetracarboxoxylic dianhydride which becomes a raw material for polyimides. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I (R is a 1-6C alkyl or aryl), e.g. 3,3'-bis(N-methyl)phthalimide. The compound of formula I is obtained by coupling, e.g. compounds of formula II (X is a halogen other than fluorine) in the presence of a transition metal catalyst. The compound of formula II is produced by reacting, e.g. a 3-halogenophthalic anhydride with an alkylamine and dehydrating the resultant compound. The transition metal catalyst comprises a component having a transition metal salt and a ligand or a transition metal salt in which the ligand is coordinated, and a reducing agent. The transition metal salt includes a nickel-compound such as nickel chloride or nickel acetylacetonate. Triphenylphosphine, or the like, is preferably used as the ligand. |
