The vertical edge line segment pair is extracted, when mutual horizontal and vertical distances satisfy preset condition. Evaluation value is computed based on number and position of horizontal edge line segments in segment pair, and horizontal segment length. Then, evaluation value is compared with reference value, based on which segment pair expression state of double sided edge of vehicle is decided. Horizontal and vertical edge line segments included in image is extracted from photograph of vehicle rear. Pair of vertical edge line segments are extracted when mutual horizontal and vertical distances satisfy width of car and standard conditions in connection with height. The evaluation value is calculated based on number of horizontal edge line segments existing between extracted pair, position of horizontal line segment and length of horizontal segment for every pair of vertical edge line segment. The evaluated value is compared with reference value, based on result of which the vertical edge line segment pair expression state of the double sided edge of vehicle is judged. An Independent claim is also included for vehicle detection apparatus.
