Compositions in the form of microcapsules or implants comprising a) an excipient or mixture of excipients which are biodegradable polymers or copolymers such that when the composition is in the form of microcapsules either the (co)polymers have a viscosity in the range 0.7 - 1.6dl/g in chloroform, and the process for preparing the microcapsules does not involve the step of fusing the microcapsules, or the (co)polymers have a viscosity of 0.5 - 1.6dl/g in chloroform and the (co)polymers have a hydrophilic character, and when the composition is in the form of implants, the (co)polymers have a viscosity between 0.5 and 1.6dl/g in chloroform, and b) at least one active material such that the microcapsules or implants liberate the active material(s) over a period, of 3 months or more with a monophasic profile, are new. A water-soluble material in a form having a high specific surface area is also claimed as is its process for preparation in which the material, preferably a protein or peptide, is dissolved in water preferably at about half its saturation concentration, it is lyophilised rapidly at a temperature below -70 deg C, and the solid formed may be crushed, preferably ultrasonically.
