A key operated switch (fig. 1) is provided for disabling an automobile air bag passive restraint system. The two or four position switch (fig. 3) includes a housing (102, 104), a rotor (106), a plurality of rotationally actuated electrical switch elements (118, 122, 124, 126, 128), a key ejecting mechanism (115, 112), and a positive positioning detent (146). In order to insert the key in the rotor, a certain minimum amount of force must be applied to the key sufficient to overcome the key ejecting mechanism (115, 112). Without such minimum insertion force, the key ejecting mechanism (115, 112) will act to expel the key from the rotor (106). The inserted key is manually rotated to cause rotation of the rotor (106). The rotation of the rotor (106), actuates select switch elements (118, 122, 124, 126, 128) attached to the rotor, according to the rotor's angular position. The switch elements (118, 122, 124, 126, 128) define a plurality of distinct switch states, each corresponding to a particular angular position of the rotor. The positive positioning detent (146) forces the rotor to an angular position corresponding to one of the distinct switch states during those periods when no external torque is being applied to the rotor (106).
|
