The rod ignition coil has a magnetic circuit with or without an air gap in or on the main core and with or without a permanent magnet in the air gap, a primary coil, a secondary coil, and connectors for electrical leads or similar and a high voltage connection to the ignition plug or similar. A holder (5) irreversibly connected to an ignition plug (2) contains a pre-mounted ignition coil unit comprising a magnetic circuit or parts of a magnetic circuit and primary and secondary coils. The insulation body (7) of the ignition plug has a high voltage proof connection to the ignition coil unit and is externally sealed.
