An illuminated sign (R) comprises a front lens (10) having a sign legend (12); an electroluminescent panel (16) disposed behind the lens (10) to provide lighting to the sign legend (12); a power source (26) operably connected to the electroluminescent panel (16); a first sensor (28) responsive to the headlights of an approaching vehicle and connected to the electroluminescent panel (16) to activate the electroluminescent panel (16) upon detection of the headlights; and a second sensor (30) responsive to ambient light and connected to the electroluminescent panel (16) such that the electroluminescent panel (16) is OFF during daylight.
