An apparatus for determining the inflation status of a vehicle tire while the tire is attached to a vehicle, comprising: a scale plate installed in a road surface, which scale plate is supported by load cells and recording means connected to the load cells for recording the weight on the scale plate with respect to time; a deformation bar located in the road surface and supported by the load cells, which deformation bar is raised above the road surface and adapted to deform the tire when it rolls over the deformation bar and recording means connected to the load cells for recording the weight on the deformation bar with respect to time; means for calculating a ratio R by dividing the maximum X of the weight on the deformation bar with respect to time when the tire is rolling over the deformation bar by the maximum Y of the weight on the scale plate with respect to time when the tire is rolling on the scale plate; and means for comparing the ratio R with a ratio corresponding to a minimum acceptable inflation pressure for the tire. |
