A pipe fitting such as a tap has an external thread which is screwed into a preinstalled receiving pipe (1) within a wall. The receiving thread (2) is kept clean prior to the application of wall plaster (5) by the prior insertion of a slightly conical plug (3), the closed end of which bears a matching thread. Following application of the wall plaster, the plug is removed by a matching tool (6), leaving the thread clean and exposed.
