There is provided novel aryloxyanilides and related compounds of formula (I), wherein R<1> is -OR, -CO2R, or halogen with R being C1-4 alkyl; R<2> is R, cyclopropyl, C2-4 alkenyl or -CH2OR; and X is O, S, CH2, NR, SO, SO2 or CO which are melatonergic agents and are useful in the treatment of circadian rhythm-related disorders and other conditions affected by melatonin activity.
